DownloadAbout PNG to PDF
Combines PNG images into a PDF. Compared with JPG, the substantive difference is that PNG carries an alpha channel.
A PNG with transparency is embedded as-is, and transparent areas are not filled with white. One thing to be clear about, though: PDF has no notion of a transparent background — what shows through is decided by the viewer, usually white paper, but a dark-mode reader may show it dark. To force a white result, composite the image onto white before converting.
PNG is lossless and typically several times larger than a JPG of the same dimensions. That makes it the right choice for screenshots, design exports, and anything with text or icons, because text edges stay sharp inside the PDF. Do not use PNG for photographs; you only inflate the file.
A PNG without transparency is encoded as JPEG at quality 92 to keep the size down, so that a 5 MB flat-colour screenshot does not produce a PDF nobody can email. For a truly lossless result, either keep the alpha channel or output at the original dimensions.
Frequently asked questions
What colour does PNG transparency become in the PDF?
The viewer decides — usually white, though a dark-mode reader may show it dark. Composite onto white first if you need a guaranteed white background.
Why was my PNG encoded as JPEG?
Because it had no alpha channel. To control file size it is converted to JPEG at quality 92; keep transparency or use original dimensions for a fully lossless result.
For a screenshot, PNG or JPG?
PNG. Screenshots are full of text and hard edges, and JPG's lossy compression adds colour noise around the glyphs.
How many images can one PDF hold?
No hard limit. Dozens of large images will use a lot of memory and the page may stall briefly while it works — let it finish.
