PDF Page Numbers

Page numbers are drawn with the built-in Helvetica font, so digits and Latin letters only. For Chinese text such as a confidentiality mark, use the PDF watermark tool.

About PDF Page Numbers

Add page numbers to a PDF with control over position, format, starting number, size and colour — or number only a few pages. Everything runs locally with pdf-lib; the file is never uploaded.

Format options

Built-in patterns are 1, 1 / 10, Page 1 of 10 and - 1 -. You can also write your own template where {n} is the current page and {total} is the page count.

Why not Chinese text

Page numbers use the built-in Helvetica font, which only encodes digits and Latin letters — Chinese raises an encoding error. If you need Chinese in the footer, use the PDF watermark tool, which renders text to an image first.

Range vs starting number

The page range decides which pages get a number; the starting number is what the first of those pages shows. Skip a cover and start the body at 1: range 2-10, start 1.

Frequently asked questions

Does it modify my original file?

No. The browser reads it into memory and hands you a new file to download; the original on disk is untouched.

Will the number cover an existing footer?

The default 28pt margin (about 1cm) is usually enough. If your PDF already has a footer, increase the margin or pick another position.

Can it handle encrypted PDFs?

No. Password-protected files are rejected as encrypted and would need decrypting first, which a browser cannot do.
