About Special Symbols

Every symbol you can copy straight out of the page: checks, stars, arrows, currency, geometric shapes and keyboard marks. One click copies the character, and it pastes as text into Word, slides, chat or code.

One caveat worth knowing up front: the same symbol can have different widths in different fonts. ★ runs wide in some typefaces, and ✓ may be substituted with a box in monospaced fonts. If you are laying out a table that must stay aligned, prefer geometric shapes like ■ □ ▲ ● — their widths are more predictable.

Colour is the other variable. ❤, ✅ and ✔ render as full-colour emoji on some systems and as flat glyphs on others, depending on whether an emoji font is present and whether a variation selector follows the character. Check the target platform before you commit to a design.

Frequently asked questions

It pastes as a box — what happened?

The target application has no glyph for that character. Use a more common symbol, or fall back to an image.

Why is it in colour on my phone?

The system rendered it as emoji. For a flat look, append the variation selector U+FE0E after the character.

Does one symbol count as one character?

Usually yes. Emoji with modifiers can occupy several code points and will count as two in a character counter.

Will these break in a PDF?

Normally no — PDF embeds fonts. If the file was exported with an unembedded default font, another machine may show missing glyphs.
