About Unit Converter
Seven groups: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed and time. Enter one value, pick its unit, and every other unit in that group gets filled in below.
Chinese units are included too: li, chi, jin, liang and mu. When a fabric shop quotes a chi, a market stall weighs in jin, or a plot is measured in mu, there is no need to look up the factor.
Temperature is handled separately. Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin are not simple multiples of each other, since they carry an offset, so that group uses different maths from the other six.
Display precision follows the magnitude: large numbers do not trail decimals, very small ones switch to scientific notation, and floating-point noise stays out of sight.
Frequently asked questions
How many digits are kept?
Nine significant digits by default, scaled to the magnitude. Plenty for daily use and moderate engineering; higher precision needs proper software.
Is chi the mainland or the Taiwanese one?
Mainland, at one third of a metre. The Taiwanese chi is about 30.3 cm and the foot 30.48 cm, so do not mix them up.
Why does 1 jin not show 500 grams?
It does. The value is stored as 0.5 kilograms and displayed as 500, with no rounding error.
Is the gallon US or imperial?
US. An imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres, a meaningful difference when converting back.
